The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) assesses the language proficiency of individuals seeking to study or work in countries where English is the primary language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to identify levels of proficiency clearly.

IELTS is a paper-based test which is available in two versions: Academic - for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada, and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programmes, and work experience in an English-speaking environment.

Test format

Total test time is 2 hours 45 minutes and covers the following modules:

  • Listening -30 minutes - 4 sections-40 questions

  • Reading-60 minutes-3 sections-40 questions

  • Writing-60 minutes-2 sections- 2 tasks

  • Speaking-11-15 minutes-3 sections
